Lesson 1: Building a Team
Ever wondered what sets successful teams apart? It’s not magic, it’s all about mastering some key principles that anyone can understand.
Picture this: a group of individuals, each bringing their unique skills and knowledge to the table. But how do you get that group to become a team? It’s not just about what you know and what you are individually good at; it’s about communication and teamwork.
Only once you’ve built a team can you focus on developing it through teamwork to achieve peak performance. And remember, teambuilding does not equal teamwork! Successful teams are constantly learning and growing, fuelled by a common, inspiring purpose. They have a playbook for success, built on trust and accountability. And here’s the kicker: they keep it small and tight, avoiding the drama of big groups.
The three key steps to understand teambuilding are:
(a) Team Basics
(b) Team Roles
(c) Team Lifecycle

Lesson 2: Developing a Team
Teambuilding is just half the story. The other half – how the team progresses once formed – is about creating the rule book (a team code), figuring out how things will get decided, and how to communicate with each other.
There some things to avoid doing as you move forward as a team: Policing each other or letting rules slide, watching out for ‘groupthink’, and ditching tech overload.
But the most important thing to actually do is to build trust, based on positive vibes, clear goals, honesty, support and inclusivity.
The key stages for developing a team are:
(a) Team Mechanics
(b) Building Team Trust

Lesson 3: Leading a Team
You’ve assembled your crew, but now it’s time to chart your course. Leading a team is like navigating through uncharted waters, and there are two ways to do it: with a single captain at the helm or as a self-managed team, where everyone shares the responsibility and steers together.
In a single leader team, it’s all about one person calling the shots. But watch out for micromanaging – no one likes a hands-on dictator who barks orders! In a self-managed team, it’s like a group of people sailing the high seas, each with their own say in the boat’s direction.
Leading a team is all about empowering your crew to shine by painting a vivid vision for the crew, trusting in their abilities and using the right style of leadership at the right time.
